Speech and language therapy Screening

Our Speech and Language Therapists at The Kids Clinic work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic treatment for children with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties.

Who do we see?

We see children with:

  • Intellectual disability
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Physical disability
  • Down syndrome
  • Poor attention and concentration skills
  • Late talkers
  • Difficulty following instructions
  • Poor vocabulary development
  • Speech Sound delay/disorder (unclear speech, limited speech sounds)
  • Difficulty putting sentences together
  • Oral motor difficulties (low muscle tone, drooling)

Speech and Language Therapy Assessment

The parents and child are invited for an assessment which takes place in the clinic. Depending on the child’s age and level of ability, the assessment can be play based or can involve standardised assessments. If you are unsure of the assessment you require please contact the clinic to discuss this with one of the therapists. Parents will be provided with a written report and recommendations following the assessment.

What does the SLT look at?

  • Speech sound development
  • how sounds are produced e.g. does the child say “tar” for “car”, “wed” for “red”
  • Language development
  • the child’s understanding and use of language
  • Social communication/Pragmatic development
  • Looking at verbal and non-verbal communication. Does the child follow the often “unspoken” rules of conversation and storytelling (e.g. taking turns in conversations, looking at the speaker, standing at an appropriate distance from the speaker, using facial expressions and gestures).
  • Play skills
  • Oral motor skills
  • use and function of the lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, and the hard and soft palates.
  • Feeding/Swallowing difficulties

Speech and Language Therapy Intervention

Intervention may be:

  • Team based intervention which involves joint sessions with occupational therapy and/or psychology, and/or intervention specialists.
  • Parent training
  • Teacher training
  • Direct one to one therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Advice for home/preschool/school settings
  • Home and/or school programmes
